Poster #11 - Exploring How Emotional Engagement Before and During Reading Predicts Achievement

Tue, April 9, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

When engaged in learning, earners experience emotions when information they study conflicts with preconceptions or personal beliefs they hold about the topic. Emotional arousal may affect learning activities as well as performance. Research on academic emotions has related achievement to students’ emotions measured before and after learning tasks. However, very little research explored learners’ emotions while they studied text. This study bridges this gap by examining students’ emotions before, during and after reading a text about a controversial topic (genetically modified foods). We first investigated whether rating emotions during study affected achievement. It did not. A new finding is that emotional activation measured during study did not predict achievement. Implications are offered for future research.
