Abstract

Imagination is a crucial dimension of learning and human development, and a key to innovation and creativity in science, technology, and the arts. Yet research on imagination in education is scarce, and even more rare with regard to students facing conditions of social exclusion. This paper presents research in which imagination is taken both as a design principle for an educational intervention, and as a heuristic for examining the conditions under which youth might reimagine selves, their communities, and new spaces for agentive action. Multi-site and interactional ethnographic methods, along with methods for researching imagination from sociocultural psychology, were used to study the Translocal Youth Radio project that connected multilingual students in Catalonia and Colorado.
