The Staying Power of Status Quo Scripts: Preservice Teachers' Field-Based Encounters With the Masculinity Narrative in Elementary School Settings

Fri, April 5, 2:25 to 3:55pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 707

Abstract

Despite very recent and hard-earned progress in legislation prohibiting discrimination and forbidding school bullying based on gender identity, expression, or sexual orientation, several recent studies have shown that the symbolic violence situated in the perfection ideals of the hegemonic male still have a stronghold in secondary school settings. However, much less is presently known about the narrative scripts in early grade settings which promote and preserve the hegemonic ideal. This paper provides a careful analysis of 300(+) preservice teachers' narrative accounts of their field-based encounters with routines and scripts in Kindergarten through 6th grade settings which perpetuate and preserve the hegemonic ideal.
