The purpose of this research was to explore the 21st century literacy practices of four 7th-12th grade English teachers inside and outside of their classrooms. In this paper, I discuss one of the study’s findings that focuses on implications for providing professional development to teachers who are learning how to use new technologies within their classrooms. Data analysis demonstrated that if we are to understand how best to provide instruction to teachers, then we must first have a thorough understanding of where they are as individuals with regard to their own literacy practices. Drawing upon this understanding while providing professional development will ultimately make the instruction provided more meaningful and more able to have a positive impact on students.
