Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to investigate bitcoin and blockchain technologies and posit their roles within a complex systems framework of educational research. As decentralized, uncertain, unpredictable, and emergent systems, these technologies are already becoming pervasive in academic research and are being piloted for positive advancements in healthcare and the environment. In particular, blockchain peer-to-peer networks hold the potential to change education and society in both positive and negative ways.
