Poster #57 - Deliberative Democracy in Educational Assessment Validation

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

This paper addresses the use of large-scale educational assessment data by professionals such as teachers, administrators and policy-makers. It does so by grounding approaches to educational assessment validation to principles of deliberative democracy. This is achieved by drawing on approaches to argument used in both educational assessment validation and in approaches to discourse ethics and deliberative democracy. A shared interest in validity by sociology and educational assessment allows educational assessment to be framed as having both a reported intended interpretation and an actual interpretation made in local contexts. This conceptualisation addresses substantial arguments on what is objectively true, normatively right, and legitimate in large-scale educational assessment design and use.
