Historically studying Dewey as representing a particular cultural theme is to think of him as a conceptual personae rather than a particular icon of progressive education, since the pragmatism’s general schema about liberty and freedom is not something identified in the “nature” of the individual but is something that is socially constructed (Hall, 1994; Popkewitz, 2008). Under the premise of the Jamesian pragmatism which highlights the aesthetic dimensions of human experience (Stone, 1999), this paper is to explore how Confucian deferential practices of the ritualized roles within social hierarchy could engender active democratic citizens in South Korean educational society, grounded in aesthetic practices rather than claims of the reasoning, using text mining techniques.
