The intelligent tutoring system for the structure strategy (ITSS) aims to help readers learn how to use the structure strategy by providing modeling, interactive practice, assessment, and feedback to readers. We hypothesized that ITSS can motivate readers to use more metacognitive reading strategies. The current randomized controlled study employed think-aloud data collection with verbal protocol analysis to understand the transformation of reading strategies of Chinese ELs before and after using ITSS for 12 weeks. Results indicated that students in the intervention group outperformed students in the control group on text structure related reading strategies (t =3.26, p=.005<.01) and metacognitive strategies (t= 3.65, p=.002<.01), but not on literal strategies (t = 1.67, p =.11>.05) on the posttest think-aloud activity.
