Growing Against the Grain: Counterstories of Asian American Mathematics Education Scholars

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

We offer critical counterstories through an analysis of eight narratives written by Asian American mathematics education researchers. Using Asian Critical Theory, we highlight our diversity as Asian Americans and thereby challenge the racist homogenization of our community. We also examine the experiences of marginalization that we have in common, and how we have each built on these experiences to shape the work we do as social justice educators and education researchers. In addition, we discuss tensions and questions in relation to who we are that we continue to grapple with. Our goal is to assert the value of our perspectives in discussions about race and education and to empower other Asian American scholars to do the same.
