Abstract

This narrative study explores the experiences and perspectives of academic leaders at select universities in Pakistan. This research highlights the stories of academic leaders as they recounted their leadership journey, sources of support, the challenges they faced and continue to face, and the lessons they learned along the way. Findings include the accidental nature of higher education leadership in Pakistan, the significance of mentoring provided by teachers and family support for nascent academic leaders, as well as the challenges Pakistani academic leaders face that range from financial challenges to teaching quality issues to retention of foreign qualified faculty. This research offers policy recommendations that can potentially ameliorate higher education leadership crises in the Pakistani context.
