Youths' and Adults' Identity in STEM and the Learning Environment: A Systematic Literature Review

Sun, April 7, 3:40 to 5:10pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Room 802B

Abstract

Through a systematic review of identity scholarship across STEM fields and across grade/age bands published between 2000-2017, we will present a synthesis of findings regarding how the learning environment informs and (re)shapes youths’ and adults’ identity within a STEM discipline.Overall, there is a limited number of studies in terms of the relationship between the learning environment and identity in STEM at the elementary and professional environments, as well as within the fields of technology and engineering.Additionally, we will highlight structures within learning environments that inform positive and negative shifts on individual’s STEM identity. Considering the relationship between the learning environment and one’s STEM identity is important scholarship to consider as women and minorities are underrepresented in STEM degrees/careers.
