This paper offers an account of creatureliness as a model for pedagogical encounters that are primed for being ecological and ones that purport to face up to our haunting ecological specters. The first part draws out some of the salient features of creatureliness that occur throughout Berry’s literary corpus while the second part provides some insight into those features from speculative realism, or object-oriented ontology more precisely, and posthumanism. The purpose of this paper, in short, is to begin describing a model of ‘pedagogical subjectivity’ for environmental education research and practice that is attuned to our ecological condition by bringing together some heretofore unfamiliar voices.
