Abstract

Conceptual-based mathematics instruction is considered useful to stimulate student motivation to learn and facilitate student deep understanding. Student interest is assumed as an intrinsic motivator for student mathematics learning and closely related with student achievement. This study examines the influence of conceptual-based instruction on US eighth-grade student interest in learning mathematics drawing on the survey data of TIMSS 2015. It found that conceptual-based instruction significantly affects student mathematics interest. The more often teachers used the components of conceptual-based instruction, such as link new content to student prior knowledge and ask students to explain their answers, the more likely students are interested in learning mathematics while encouraging students to express their ideas in class may lead to student low mathematics interest.
