Poster #50 - Influence of Showing Instructor in Online Video Lectures: A Systematic Review

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Despite increasing number of online video lectures that show instructor, educators and researchers have little understanding about the influence of showing instructor in online video lectures. The study reviewed and synthesized extant literature on the effect of instructor presence in video lecture on learning, perceptions, and engagement. Although several studies have found positive influences of showing instructor in video lectures, other studies revealed no or negative effects of showing instructor on learning and perceived cognitive load. Empirical evidence also suggested that the potential positive effects of instructor presence in online video lectures are dependent on several factors. The paper concludes with future directions for research on instructor presence in online video lectures.
