Abstract

This paper highlights research with youth about schools and civic engagement by connecting a qualitative study with young people in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and a participatory visual research study with ethnic minority young people in Hong Kong. We explore ways that school was imagined and experienced by participants in both as a space of marginalization and a space where agentic communities were formed in both contexts. The paper expands on how participants’ sense of belonging and resistance are negotiated in their discussions, stories and through cellphilms (cellphones + video-making). Findings from the research suggest that schooling experiences encouraged young people to situate themselves politically, and articulate a longing for an increased sense of belonging in their schools and cities.
