Teacher Collaboration: A Comparative Study in Chile and Portugal

Abstract

This paper presents results of a study carried out comparatively in Chile and Portugal on school-based collaboration. Its focus is on the interconnexion between teacher views about benefits of collaboration, collective efficacy beliefs referred to their colleagues, experiences and constraints regarding collaborative actions. Eight school case studies in each country, representing the characteristics of their educational systems and diversity of teachers’ school responsibilities (level, subject specialisation), provide rich data on the convergence and diversity in what teachers think and do regarding professional collaboration, and support the importance of collaborative work recognised in international studies such as OECD’s TALIS 2013.
