German “All-day-schools” extend school time and are expected to improve equality of opportunities in the educational system by providing a variety of extracurricular activities. Students can choose between those activities. In our longitudinal study StEG-P (67 German primary schools, 2’149 students) we analysed for effects of students’ background variables on participating in reading or natural science activities. The probability to attend natural science courses was not linked to student characteristics. But girls and students with a higher baseline reading achievement participated more frequently in reading activities. Socio-economic status, migration status and the educational family background had no impact. Therefore reading activities might fail to reduce the difference between higher or lower achieving students or the gender gap in reading performance.
