Object-ive Self-Study of Administrative Work

Fri, April 5, 2:25 to 3:55pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

This self-study examines my year as an interim administrator at my university. Data sources included an object and five drawn nodal moments. The object, a skeleton representing El Dia de Los Muertos, provided the context for examining practice through the use of reflective writing on the meaning of the object as it related to my professional life. In addition, across the academic year five nodal moments were drawn, followed by a reflective writing of each moment. With two critical friends, text were analyzed using phrase/sentence level analysis, where meaning-based coding emerged using a constant comparative method. Results revealed five prevailing themes reflecting intentions of practice: negotiating meaning, attending to protocol, addressing needs, defending faculty autonomy, and contextualizing through humor.
