This paper presents a narrative review of research in sociocultural literacy studies with the purpose of highlighting dominant storylines of such research. Using Barkhuizen's (2011) concept of "narrative knowledging", I assert that narrative methods highlight literacy practice as morally intonated, temporally situated, biographically oriented, or culturally nuanced. As such, narrative knowledging enables literacy scholars to democratize what counts as literacy and contribute to social change.
