Power "White Out": Asian American Vulnerability in Teacher Preparation

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

Research has chronicled the inhospitality of teacher preparation for teachers of color. This paper builds on existing literature to highlight the creation of vulnerability for an Asian American teacher candidate in a predominantly white graduate program. Drawing on AsianCrit and Lasky’s (2005) model of vulnerability, the study analyzes autoethnographic counter-storytelling (Chávez, 2012) through the constant comparative method. Focusing on themes surrounding invisibility/hypervisibility and vulnerability, we found that the underlying structures limited this Asian American teacher candidate’s opportunity for authentic, open learning and willing vulnerability.
