Conditions Under Which Improvement Science/Networked Improvement Communities Produce Large Scalable Gains

Abstract

This study examines the design of two highly successful Improvement Science/Networked Improvement Community projects that demonstrated LARGE scalable improvements for a seemingly intractable problems of practice. The Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) project focused on accelerating Title I students in grades 4-8, and the Carnegie Foundations Statway initiative focused on reducing the high failure rate in community college developmental math courses. While these projects were very different, this study found that the design process used by each (a) was very similar, and (b) very different from typical conceptions of how to leverage research evidence to improve practice. This paper will examine the implications of these common design elements for developing other scalable highly effective interventions for increasing social justice.
