Abstract

It is imperative that meta-analysts locate and synthesize all available effects. Unfortunately, primary researchers fail to publish all available effects, often due to a lack of statistically significant effects or small treatment effects. To combat this phenomenon, researchers suggest locating and including unpublished studies or effects. One popular approach, among the many available, is to contact the author of a primary study and ask for the missing data. One question remains, which drives this research: what is the success rate for recovering outcome data when it is unclear that the authors collected the data? This paper answers this question through a comprehensive survey of primary study authors, where the goal is to collect unreported outcome data.
