Text data are very common in education. Topic modeling is a statistical approach that has been widely used to analyze a large amount of textual data. In this study, we propose a new approach that incorporates topic modeling and growth curve modeling to understand how students change their use of language in response to instruction by analyzing constructed response data that are collected from middle school students over multiple time points.
