Poster #30 - Integrating Immersive Virtual Worlds With Computational Modeling to Support Scientific Practice in Elementary Learners

Sun, April 7, 11:50am to 1:20pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

It is now widely agreed upon that modeling is the language of science. Therefore, learning science must involve learning modeling as the practice through which knowledge is constructed. Furthermore, leading scholars have also argued for computational thinking, an analytic problem solving and design approach fundamental to computing, to be an essential focus of K12 curriculum. Research has shown that curricular integration of computational thinking and scientific modeling is a complex and challenging endeavor that involves the introduction and adoption of new literacies alongside disciplinary ideas that students find challenging to understand. The EcoMOD research project combines an immersive virtual environment with hands-on, interactive modeling in order to support elementary students’ learning of computation and scientific modeling in a reflexive manner.
