Solving the Gender Gap in STEM: Exploring STEM Faculty's Gender-Biased Behaviors in the Classroom

Mon, April 8, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM in both college and the STEM workforce despite advances to improve the amount of women pursuing STEM. Therefore, the question remains: What is contributing to the persistent gender gap in STEM in both college and the STEM workforce? Valued masculinity in STEM culture may shape faculty and student interactions thus providing insight into why the problem persists. In this roundtable, methodological considerations will be discussed for measuring faculty gender bias behavior in classrooms to further understand why and how this occurs. By understanding faculty gender biased behavior, how it develops, and how it is enacted in classrooms, we can develop strategies and interventions to assist faculty in creating more inclusive classroom environments.
