We conducted a systematic literature review regarding the impact of visual literacy for learning in the K-12 context by analyzing the methodological rigor of the research base to critique visual literacy research and provide direction for future studies. We screened 1693 articles yielding an initial corpus of 88 articles, which were evaluated with methodological quality indicators (MQIs). This process resulted in a final set of 44 articles. We present the detailed coding procedure, data analysis, and synthesize the methodological weakness and strength of visual literacy research to provide numerous recommendations for future endeavors.
