Diversity and Free Speech: Inhabited Institutional Logics in a Discourse of Institutional Citizenship

Abstract

Using insights from institutional logic and inhabited institutionalist perspectives, this paper (a) critically examines institutional policies using policy discourse analysis to understand how conflicting diversity and free speech logics formally manifest on college campuses and (b) build a foundation for investigating how institutional dynamics shape and are shaped by individual action and interaction. These logics are exemplified in a discourse of institutional citizenship, which upholds civility and tolerance as the predominant form of individual expression and shows the ways the free speech discursively acts as the limit for diversity and equity in an institutional setting.
