A Collaborative Approach to Teacher Evaluation

Abstract

This interview study examined the experiences of administrators and teacher leaders as they collaborated to evaluate teachers within the context of an evaluation model implemented across the U.S. Findings demonstrated how features of the model influenced their work. Members of the evaluation team utilize a rubric to assess teacher performance. Teacher leaders guide ongoing professional development where teachers analyze their pedagogical practices to improve student learning. Participants described the strategies they use to develop strong relationships with teachers, and the ways that they address resistance. Findings are important to understanding how the roles of teacher leaders may be expanded, and some of the challenges experienced by teacher leaders who have worked alongside administrators as evaluators.
