"I Don't Want to Be Stereotyped": A Study With Latinx Students Informed by Photovoice

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to apply photovoice, a community-based participatory research methodology that utilizes photography, to give voice to Latinx high school students’ lived educational experiences, engage in critical dialogue, and promote policy development specific to educators in a selected school. This was a multi-phase study with 10 Latinx students at “Eastland High School” in a rural community in a Midwestern state. The participants were enrolled in the school’s "Risk Academy," designed for students labeled “at risk.” Three prominent themes emerged from the analyses, Disconnection from School, Separation from the Main Body, and Support Comes from the Outside. Recommendations include ways to illustrate how make research matter, including ways to challenge dominant narratives that subvert equitable education.
