"The Other Side of Me": Struggling Between Teacher and Sexual Identity

Abstract

Concealment and self-marginalisation are commonly reported aspects of the lives of LGBTQ teachers. Through the analysis of one female, identifying as an LGBTQ newly qualified teacher’s (NQT) story, this study aimed to explore the verifying relationship between a teacher identity and sexual identity as an LGBTQ NQT prepares to enter the workforce in Ireland. This study found that the participant struggled with the upcoming decision of whether to remain true to herself or to conceal her sexual identity to appease school stakeholders operating behind the veneer of a ‘liberal’ and accepting Irish society. Conclusions regarding the narrow scope of the teacher education, and the self-verification of both identities are drawn.
