Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between parent empowerment and postsecondary education enrollment in the different racial/ethnic and socioeconomic status context in a nationally representative cohort of high school students drawn from High School Longitudinal Study of 2009. Multinomial logistic regression demonstrated parent empowerment components (e.g., sense of meaning, competence, self-determination, participation in fundraising/volunteering/school event. participation in parent-teacher interaction/ PTO/general meeting, STEM participation, and community participation in the wider community) interact with different SES and different parents’ racial and ethnic groups in predicting college enrollment. Findings suggest school counselors utilize parent empowerment strategically for effective college outcomes and develop specific strategies for culturally and economically diverse parents.
