Abstract

Teacher preparation programs have been faced with the daunting task to diversify America’s teacher workforce, promote equitable teaching practices, and social justice education for minority and low-income students. This study examines the integration of a practice-based teacher education model in an educator preparation program at an urban Minority Serving Institution and the ways in which it promotes mathematics and literacy equity among elementary learners. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to determine how faculty, teacher candidates, and mentor teachers employed asset-based pedagogies to leverage mathematics and literacy equity among urban learners. Findings from this study provide a means by which not only Minority Serving Institutions, but also a model by which other universities can replicate to promote equitable teaching praxis.
