The Culture of Power and the Power of Culture: Auto-Ethnography of a Transnational Immigrant Teacher of Color

Sat, April 6, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

Through this autoethnography, I seek to establish a professional identity in the context of a predominantly White, university-based teacher education program in the U.S. I reflect on my identity development as a transnational teacher of color from India, bringing the importance of multiplex identities to the foreground in the wider professional discourses and practices of teacher education. Employing autobiographical analysis, I then create a counter-story to the dominant discourses of teacher education to call for bringing in more perspectives and experiences from teachers like me.
