Males of Color in Living Learning Communities: Lessons From a Quantitative Exploration

Abstract

This quantitative study presents findings from an examination focused on the implementation of a retention program designed for males of color at a State University in the Midwest region of the United States. At the center of inquiry, this study examined the experiences of 3 cohorts of Black male freshman students enrolled in a living-learning community. This study explored the relationships between sense of belonging, transition to college, and self-esteem. Sociocultural capital offered a framework to conduct this analysis revealing the importance of: building a welcoming campus, connecting to peers, reaching out to faculty members, and building environments that enhance self-esteem.
