Sun, April 7, 9:55 to 11:25am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 717A

Abstract

This study used a cultural capital and disruptive innovation framework to gather information on counselors’ perceptions of delivering virtual school counseling to underserved, low socioeconomic students in urban and rural areas, and adjusted cohort at Greenleaf Academy. Using qualitative methods, surveys and interviews were used to identify the counselors’ perceptions of how they transitioned from face-to-face to online counseling and how they perceived the efficacy of virtual counseling for underserved youth. Findings from this study indicated skills that the counselors perceived as beneficial in the virtual environment, along with what they learned while working as a virtual school counselor and what skills they still want to learn.
