Video Reflection: Application of 21st Century Skills in Teacher Education

Abstract

Education, business, and policy leaders recognize the need to develop competencies in the 21st-century skills of creativity, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and information, media, and technology skills (Partnership for 21st-century skills, 2016). Researchers’ prior study uncovered the positive impact of simultaneously integrating those skills in teacher education (Author, 2017), although few studies detail how to explicitly facilitate this process (Schleicher, 2012). Using a mixed methods approach, the current research explored how and to what extent a video reflection requirement applies the simultaneous integration of 21st-century skills. Results indicate that the process of recording their teaching, receiving and sharing feedback with peers, and disseminating videos online increased teacher candidates’ perceived competencies in all 21st-century skills.
