To stay competitive in the labor market older workers need to either upgrade existing or to learn new skills through occupational training and education. Furthermore, employers are more willing to hire older students upon credential completion than in the past due to low unemployment, and they collaborate with community colleges to provide workforce training for their employees. Community colleges are also the preferred choice for older workers due to affordability; open door admission; shorter period to earn a credential; and convenient geographic location. Based on analysis of focus group and interview data, this paper discusses strategies Ohio community colleges employ to improve labor market outcomes for older (40+) adults and to also meet the needs of local employers.
