A Qualitative Investigation on Individuals' Experiences of School-Based Restorative Practices

Abstract

Restorative Practices (RP) are increasingly being used throughout U.S. schools in hopes to improve school climate, reduce suspension and expulsion rates, and ultimately provide more humane approaches to school discipline. Though quantitative studies have investigated the implementation and progress of RP in schools, few studies have used qualitative modes of inquiry to better understand individuals’ experiences of RP in schools. This study investigated two students’ and one adults’ experiences of RP in an after-school detention program. Interviews were coded and five major themes emerged: unfamiliarity with RP, positive experiences, racial implications, and desires and challenges. These themes contributed to the feedback provided to the school at the conclusion of the study.
