Abstract

This paper discusses a Midwest university’s application of a service-learning project between a community drug and alcohol recovery program and a principal preparation program. The value of service-learning in higher education is documented in nursing and teacher education programs. Yet, little research exist on service-learning as part of principal preparation. This paper attempts to fill the gap in the literature about service learning in principal preparation. In this paper, I discuss how educational leadership standards and field experiences provide a base for this instructional strategy. I address how service-learning can help principal candidates build social and civic understanding, and awareness of the needs of a community. I conclude with challenges and implications for principal preparation programs considering service-learning.
