Preparing Great Leaders: A Review of the Literature on Principal Preparation Evaluation

Mon, April 8, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

More and more, states are developing policies for principal preparation program accountability. However, there is concern that these policies do not rely on evidence. This literature review looks at the following research question: what are the associations between an aspiring principal's preparation on school-level outcomes such as student achievement, school climate, teacher retention, principal retention, and teacher and principal practice? This paper summarizes the literature on what outcomes should be considered in a comprehensive principal preparation program evaluation, and what are the policy implications of using those outcomes for principal preparation program re-authorization.
