A Literacy Curriculum for the Critical Viewing of Multimodal News Narratives in a Post-Truth Era

Abstract

In a post-truth era, the role of educators, in preparing our young to navigate the complex, and sometimes treacherous, information landscape, and arm them with the requisite literacies through the curriculum to contest narratives and combat falsehoods, becomes increasingly critical. This paper presents a pedagogy, informed by Systemic Functional Theory, and trialled in XXX, on the teaching of multimodal news narratives. It also discusses the implications of the work as a contribution to the global conversation on a curriculum for multiliteracies. The results of the study conducted suggest that both teachers and students found the lessons to be useful and the learning of a meta-language to evaluate multimodal news narratives to be helpful.
