On the Consistency of Catholic Education and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy

Mon, April 8, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Grand Centre

Abstract

This paper examines the ways in which a theory of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (hereafter, CSP) is consistent with the moral foundations and purposes of Catholic education. Relying on standards of humanities-oriented (AERA, 2009) and qualitative research (Creswell, 1998), this paper proposes a conceptual theoretical consistency or overlap between theories and foundations of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy and Christian inculturation and Catholic Social Teaching, ultimately arguing that Catholic education and Catholic educators may be especially poised to utilize Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy in schools.
