A Focus Group Study of High-Achieving, Underrepresented Minority, Secondary Students' Consideration of STEM Teaching Careers

Mon, April 8, 4:10 to 5:40pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

This study examines the career considerations of high-achieving, underrepresented minority students, focusing specifically on STEM teaching careers. Data were collected through 21 focus groups held with high-achieving underrepresented minority students and their parents. Focus group discussions centered on three topics: (a) students career interests and barriers; (b) the people, organizations and experiences that influence students’ career consideration; and (c) the fit between STEM teaching careers and students’ life goals. Findings reveal a broad range of people and experiences that influence students’ career considerations. Findings also show that although the schools of participating students did not positively influence students to consider STEM teaching careers, schools are well-positioned to influence students career consideration. Suggestions for school leaders, teachers and parents are provided.
