Looking for Impact Across Data Use Practices: An Evidence Evaluation Framework From a Literature Review

Abstract

This review of the literature shows how the largely independent activities known as data-driven decision making (DDDM) or data use, educational data mining (EDM), and learning analytics (LA) have emerged within the same period and ask complementary questions about how data can be used in P-20 settings. To appreciate the diversity and foci in these areas a broad review of the literature was conducted encompassing over 1300 citations. The multi-leveled review shows that these fields are largely distinct in their publication venues and in the kinds of pieces produced, although EDM and LA share some common aspects as do LA and DDDM. An integrative evaluation model was developed to illustrate how these different activities can be conceptually connected.
