The Academic Career in Research Universities in Chile

Abstract

Faculty are crucial to higher education and especially for research university (Albatch, 2007). Chilean institutions have not yet become research universities (Bernasconi, 2007), but those in this study have the desire. This study was guided by the question what are the perceptions that key actors have on the evolution of the academic profession at six research-oriented universities in Chile? Through a qualitative methodology, the study included interviews with 57 key actors at six research-oriented universities in Chile. Preliminary findings highlight that these universities have a similar academic track and that the requirements for faculty members have become stricter overtime. Internationalization is key for these universities and there are historical milestones that have affected the academic career.
