An Exploratory Analysis of Collegiate Fine Arts Attendance

Abstract

Using the Wabash National Study on Liberal Arts Education (WNS), the author explores the associations of elements of socio-demographics, habitus, and components of human and social capital on students' likelihood of attending fine arts events during their first-year experience of college. The author provides gender interactions to highlight any differences. The findings indicate that gender, institutional and major choice, academics aptitude, predispositions towards diversity and contributing to the arts, high school racial diversity, and time spent volunteering in co-curricular activities to have significant associations towards collegiate fine arts participation. Gender interactions indicate a positive association in fine arts attendance for more conservative women and an associated decrease in attendance for women who have stronger beliefs in contributing to the arts.
