Poster #13 - What Can Qualitative Profiles of Quantitative Data Teach Us? Variations to a Growth Mind-Set Intervention

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to use case study methodology to explore differences in how individual participants responded to a growth mindset intervention. Having found evidence of only modest effects in a larger quantitative study of a high-school-based growth mindset intervention, we undertook an intensive research design to understand better how nine individuals responded to the intervention. Combing through variables at an individual level allowed us to discover nuances in response to the intervention that we were unable to see at the group level. We uncovered a great deal of variability in how participants responded to the intervention in the short- and long-term. Methodological and theoretical implications are discussed.
