This study examines the creation and implementation of a video-based assessment of teacher pedagogical knowledge called the Video Assessment of Teacher Knowledge (VATK). The VATK was developed with the intention of creating an easily administered, standardized assessment that can provide information on teacher candidate knowledge of teaching at important points during their training programs and into the teaching field. In this paper we describe the VATK’s theoretical framework and the process for item creation. Initial data collected using the instrument came from teacher candidates entering a teacher education program and practicing teachers. Classical test theory and item response theory analysis were conducted and implications for the future use of the VATK are discussed.
