The Promise and Potential of Multicultural Education in Supporting and Enhancing Students' Critical Media Literacies

Abstract

While there has been an increasing focus in the research literature that examines youths’ critical media literacies, less is known about how teachers might harness multicultural education in support of students’ critical media literacies. Drawing on classroom observations and varying multimodal data sources collected from a multicultural studies class I used Yoon’s (2016) critical global literacies and Mihailidis’s (2014) 5A’s of Media Literacy to ask: How might a teacher use his multicultural studies class to support and enhance his students’ critical media literacies? Findings revealed three approaches that a teacher used to support and enhance his students’ critical media literacies: attending to students’ lived experiences, using current events, and presenting multiple perspectives. Implications are offered for research and practice.
