Teacher educators often ask pre-service teachers to work through their emotions about race, class, and gender in order to develop skills of critical reflection. While many educators have explored how whiteness impacts emotional responses, teacher education has rarely centered the emotional experiences of pre-service teachers of color, who are directly harmed by white supremacy. We suggest that feminist theories of women of color, including Gloria AnzaldĂșa, Audre Lorde, and Sara Ahmed, provide a framework of transformative emotional work that moves beyond reacting to white supremacy and that imagines healing for people of color, and we consider how critical feminist theories might provide a different foundation for teacher education.
